#MexicanSocialSecurityInstitute#Mexico.- The Director General of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Zoé Robledo, reported significant progress in the Government of Mexico’s goal to build one thousand Early Education and Care Centres (CECI) across 507 municipalities. This initiative aims to provide half a million spaces for children aged between 43 days and four years, particularly in regions showing growth in formal employment. The project forms part of a national strategy to strengthen access to quality childcare and support working families throughout the country.

During the morning conference at the National Palace, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Mr Robledo explained that 150 sites have already been approved to begin the construction of 200 CECI next year. He added that 250 more centres will be built in 2027, followed by 200 per year in 2028 and 2029, reaching the full target of one thousand centres by 2030. This expansion reflects a long-term government commitment to improving the wellbeing of children and promoting equality in the workplace.

Marking the International Day of Care and Support, the IMSS Director General highlighted that the new facilities will be located near workplaces, within 15 Economic Development Hubs for Wellbeing (PODECOBI), and in Infonavit housing complexes. He noted that the pilot project began in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, with the construction of the first five CECI designed to benefit women employed in the manufacturing industry, many of whom are migrants without family support networks. These centres will offer a safe environment for children while fostering greater inclusion and opportunity for mothers.

Work began in May on the Paraje Oriente, Las Gladiolas, and Senderos de San Isidro centres, which have achieved 66.5%, 41.1%, and 46% progress, respectively. Construction of the Municipio Libre site started in July, while the Urbivilla del Cedro centre broke ground in August. Mr Robledo underlined that the creation of the National Care System, commitment number 55 of President Sheinbaum, responds to an urgent reality: in Mexico, only 45 out of every 100 women participate in the labour market, compared with 75 out of every 100 men. He stressed that women dedicate an average of 41.8 hours per week to unpaid care work, nearly double the time men spend, underscoring the need for a fair and inclusive care policy.
