#FederalGovernment, #Mexico.- Within the framework of the International Day of Care and Support, the Government of Mexico, through the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), announced the construction of 200 Early Education and Care Centres (CECI) by 2026, as part of the target of one thousand centres by 2030. According to the official report, 150 sites have already been approved, marking significant progress in the development of the National Care System, designed to guarantee the right to accessible and dignified care for all.
During the morning conference “The People’s Press Briefing”, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasised the importance of acknowledging the historic role of women in caregiving, noting that “the State must take on part of these responsibilities” to strengthen their economic independence. She underlined that IMSS nurseries have long enabled many women to enter the workforce, and reaffirmed that the system’s expansion seeks to provide opportunities for women to study, work and fully develop their potential, should they choose to do so.
The Director General of IMSS, Zoé Robledo Aburto, reported that by 2030, one thousand CECI will be built across 507 municipalities, creating half a million spaces for children aged between 43 days and three years. He added that 250 new centres will be built in 2027, followed by 200 additional facilities each year between 2028 and 2030, reinforcing a long-term commitment to supporting working mothers and their families throughout the country.
Mr Robledo explained that the new facilities will be strategically located near workplaces, Economic Development Hubs for Wellbeing (PODECOBI), and Infonavit housing developments. He highlighted ongoing projects in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, where the Paraje Oriente CECI has reached 66.5% completion, Gladiolas 41.1%, Sendero de San Isidro 46%, Municipio Libre 8.4%, and Urbivilla El Cedro 5.6%. Finally, he announced that in December, construction will begin on the first rural CECI, located in San Quintín, Baja California, reaffirming the government’s commitment to an inclusive and equitable care policy for all communities.
