#FederalGovernment#Mexico.-  At the inaugural National Meeting of Universities and Public Higher Education Institutions, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo called upon vice-chancellors and rectors to join the SaberesMx platform, aiming to make knowledge accessible to the people of Mexico. The President emphasised the platform’s vast potential, stating: “I also call on you, you have already heard this, to this great invitation made by the Ministry of Public Education, to be part of this SaberesMx platform; this platform has an enormous future and potential.” She added that by ensuring university teachings are available on the platform, “we are going to make universities closer to the people.”

In a move respecting the autonomy of universities, the Chief Executive simultaneously urged institutions to undertake an exercise in Republican Austerity to significantly expand student enrolment and guarantee educational access. President Sheinbaum declared that the days of “the trappings of power, of privileges, are long gone,” stressing that greater austerity is directly linked to increased capacity. She affirmed: “The fewer privileges there are, the more enrolment can be opened; it is feasible,” arguing that this collective effort would greatly benefit the student body.

The President acknowledged the willingness of the rectors to collaborate on establishing the new National Baccalaureate and expressed confidence that, through joint efforts between universities and the Government of Mexico, national challenges could be effectively addressed. She outlined ambitious goals such as achieving technological sovereignty and fostering innovation, reiterating that a core part of her long-standing mission is to ensure education as a right. She reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that no young person is turned away from university studies, believing this transformation will promote peace, reduce violence, and place education at the heart of the nation’s development.

The collaborative initiative was underscored by key cabinet members, with Mario Delgado Carrillo, Secretary of Public Education, highlighting that the goal is for universities to become spaces of freedom and tranquillity. Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, Secretary of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, described the event as a significant milestone, marking a deep shift towards an inter-sectoral knowledge strategy. The SaberesMx platform, detailed by Undersecretary Ricardo Villanueva Lomelí, is designed to democratise access, serve as a vocational guidance tool, and will launch its first course on addiction prevention on 17 November.
