Mexico takes favorable note of U.S. lawsuit against Texas SB4 legislation / @aliciabarcena @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- The Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), takes favorable note of the lawsuit that the Department of Justice of the United States of America (DoJ) filed against the Texas SB4 legislation, signed by Governor Greg Abbott in December 2023, alleging its unconstitutionality given that the law grants immigration powers to local authorities to exercise immigration actions, a capacity that is exclusive to the Federal Government.

The Foreign Ministry expressed its rejection of the implementation of this anti-immigrant measure that seeks to stop the flow of migrants by criminalizing them, encouraging the separation of families, discrimination and racial profiling that violate the human rights of the migrant community.

In light of these measures, since last year the SRE instructed the consular network in Texas to reinforce its preventive consular protection actions to protect and defend the rights of 11 million Mexican nationals living in the state.

The Government of Mexico categorically rejects any measure that fosters hostile environments that could lead to acts or hate crimes against migrant communities, and that contemplates the involuntary return of migrants without respect for due process.

The Foreign Ministry will follow up on the process initiated by the U.S. Department of Justice and will continue to provide timely, humane and dignified consular assistance and protection.
