México and Spain work to strengthen relations and increase cooperation / @aliciabarcena @SRE_mx >>>
#SRE.- The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, María Teresa Mercado Pérez, and the Secretary of State for Ibero-America and the Caribbean and Spanish in the World, Susana Sumelzo Jordán, chaired the Second Meeting of the Mexico-Spain Permanent Political Subcommittee, held a few days before the forty-seventh anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries (March 28, 1977).
The mechanism allows for the promotion and increase of cooperation and comprehensive dialogue in the different areas of the relationship. It was instituted through a memorandum of understanding, signed in March 2022, and met for the first time in Madrid in October of that year.
The meeting was divided into two segments: the one corresponding to the bilateral sphere, headed on the Mexican side by Undersecretary Mercado; while the one related to the multilateral sphere was led by Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Joel Hernández García.
On this occasion, Undersecretary María Teresa Mercado and Secretary of State Susana Sumelzo, together with their respective delegations, carried out an in-depth review of the issues that underpin the bilateral strategic relationship and agreed on the interest in continuing to strengthen it for the benefit of the Mexican and Spanish people, as well as to promote it in the bilateral, Ibero-American and multilateral spheres.
Both officials welcomed the fluidity of political contacts, the breadth of economic relations, the depth of scientific-technical and cultural-educational cooperation. They also discussed the respective regional situations, the challenges they imply and the ways to expand cooperation to face them.
Agreeing on the importance of the Spanish language as a common heritage, Undersecretary María Teresa Mercado and Secretary of State Susana Sumelzo signed the Memorandum of Understanding for the International Promotion of the Spanish Language in the Diplomatic Sphere and in International Organizations.
