#SRE.- The Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), and the United Nations system in Mexico today signed three memorandums of understanding to expand the installed capacity of care and strengthen the services provided to people in human mobility in the Multiservice Centers for Inclusion and Development in Tapachula and Huixtla, Chiapas, as well as in the Integral Centers for Migrants in Tijuana, Baja California; Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua; and Matamoros, Tamaulipas.
The agreements signed are part of the implementation of the Mexican Model of Human Mobility, which comprehensively addresses the migration phenomenon and recognizes that Mexico is a country of origin, transit, destination and return of migrants.
During the signing of the agreements, Foreign Minister Bárcena pointed out that “the migrant is a person in labor mobility who is seeking opportunities, a better life, and for this reason we have to humanize human mobility, offer them dignity and respect […] the new narrative demands that we see migration as a regional phenomenon”.
The head of the SRE welcomed the signing of the agreements and the support of UN Mexico. “UNHCR has done a very important job because it has already managed to provide employment opportunities to 40,000 refugees in this six-year term […] it is about strengthening our capacities and addressing the structural causes of irregular migration, therefore, the Mexican Model of Human Mobility must continue to be strengthened through alliances,” she said.
For his part, the UN Resident Coordinator in Mexico, Peter Grohmann, remarked that “today we mark a milestone in our collaboration with the Government of Mexico by signing these important cooperation agreements. These projects are the result of an unprecedented inter-agency effort in the region and reflect our shared commitment to ensure that people on the move receive the dignified and humane care they deserve.
