#ISSSTE.- The Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (Issste) implements actions and dissemination campaigns among mothers and fathers, as well as first contact medical personnel, in order to identify warning signs of childhood cancer, since most cases can be cured if detected in time.
Within the framework of September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the institution highlights the importance of increasing awareness among the population to prevent this pathology which, according to the National Center for Childhood and Adolescent Health (CeNSIA), is one of the main causes of mortality among children; in addition, there are approximately seven thousand new cases, of which more than half (52 percent) will be leukemias https://goo.su/iX9IMz.
Eduardo Baños Rodríguez, Deputy Chief of the Medical Section of the Pediatric Oncology Service of the “20 de Noviembre” National Medical Center (CMN), informed that in Issste the survival rate for childhood cancer is over 65 percent, while at a national level it is 56 percent; this is thanks to the dissemination initiatives to identify signs of suspicion, timely detection and quick referral to hospitals with specialized care.
The institute applies Código Dorado, a high priority protocol and prompt attention to patients from zero to 18 years of age detected with suspected cancer in any of its medical units. This has reduced the time it takes to obtain a diagnosis, as a result of reducing bureaucratic procedures and prioritizing health, he added.
