#SRE.- On behalf of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, participated in the General Debate of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), where she reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to building a just, egalitarian and fraternal society.

Before Heads of State and Government, Foreign Minister Bárcena declared that “we are facing a change of era: neoliberal hegemony has demonstrated its palpable failure by proposing an extractivist development model that socializes losses, privatizes profits, impoverishes people and devastates the planet”.

In this context, the secretary stressed that Mexico is committed to building emancipatory alternatives, which is why President Andrés Manuel López Obrador implemented the Model of Mexican Humanism, which guides the national transformation project and promotes “the construction of a just, egalitarian and fraternal society, a moral economy that guarantees an equitable distribution of income and respect for the environment.”

“It is a revolution of consciences that has reversed the degradation and precariousness of the living conditions of our population.” In the last five years, more than 9.5 million Mexicans were lifted out of poverty, salaries increased by 135%, tax privileges were eliminated and corruption and evasion were curbed; at the constitutional level, the rights of indigenous peoples, equality and the political participation of women were recognized.

The head of Mexican diplomacy pointed out that this new development model was also reflected in a humanist foreign policy close to the people, and in the implementation of the Mexican Model of Human Mobility to address the structural causes of migration, because Mexico recognizes that “migration is not a problem, it is a phenomenon, it is not a crime; migrants are not criminals,” she said.
