Hand and food hygiene key to preventing E. coli gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections / @Tu_IMSS >>>
#IMSS.- Infections caused by E. coli bacteria manifest themselves mainly with abdominal pain, cramps and diarrhea when they occur in the gastrointestinal tract, and with burning or constant urgency to urinate when they are in the urinary tract; to prevent contracting or spreading them, it is crucial to wash hands and food properly, said Dr. Ismael Juárez Galindo, coordinator of Medical Programs of the Hospitalization Care Area of the Hospital Division of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).
“How can we prevent it? Consuming preferably purified water, washing food well, cooking it well, washing hands properly. E. coli is considered to be a bacterium that normally lives inside our intestines, so we must have the appropriate hygiene and health conditions to avoid becoming infected or infecting more people,” he said.
The specialist called on the population in general not to self-medicate and to go to the Family Medicine Unit (UMF) or the Emergency Department in case of fever, vomiting with bleeding and a general decline in health.
He pointed out that Social Security has specialized health personnel to attend to these infections, which are detected by taking specific cultures of the bacteria or determining the toxins it produces.
He pointed out that the groups most vulnerable to E. coli are the elderly, children and patients with immune system deficiencies. “Most cases are mild to moderate, antibiotics are given orally and management is on an outpatient basis. However, a small proportion may develop more severe manifestations requiring hospitalization.”
