#SRE.- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) informs that the Mexican consulates in Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, Raleigh and Washington D. C. activated, since September 24, the emergency protocol for natural disasters due to the imminent arrival of Hurricane Helene to the southeastern United States.

The consular representations issued alerts for the Mexican resident population, through their social networks, providing key preventive information and recommendations and actions to follow in the event of possible flooding and evacuation orders, taking into account the instructions of local authorities; in addition to sharing locations of available shelters. Likewise, the emergency numbers of consulates and the Center for Information and Assistance to Mexicans (CIAM) were also disseminated.

Category 4 Hurricane Helene made landfall on September 26 in the northwest region of Florida, causing severe damage in several communities in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. The five consulates covering the affected areas have been in constant communication with state and federal emergency management authorities, as well as with the Red Cross, community organizations and local leaders to coordinate assistance and protection efforts for the Mexican community.

The Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta reported the unfortunate death of five Mexican nationals, one in Georgia and four in Tennessee, and is in communication with the families of three of them to arrange for the repatriation of their remains. The other consulates in the affected areas have informed that, so far, no other Mexican nationals are known to be dead or missing.

Personnel from the Mexican Consulate in Orlando conducted tours in the most damaged areas of central and northern Florida, visiting shelters. Similarly, consular teams in Atlanta and Raleigh will continue to visit shelters and damaged areas to assess the needs of the Mexican community and provide the necessary assistance.

The SRE, through the Directorate General of Consular Protection and Strategic Planning, will follow the development and effects of the hurricane and will continue to provide consular assistance and protection to Mexican nationals who require it.
