#SRE.- The Government of Mexico received 220 archaeological pieces corresponding to different regions of the country, which were restituted with the support of authorities from Argentina, Canada, the United States and Switzerland. This is the first delivery of this kind made by the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
The secretaries of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, and Culture, Claudia Curiel de Icaza, accompanied by the general director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Diego Prieto Hernández, and the undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, María Teresa Mercado Pérez, led the reception of 220 pieces that are part of Mexican cultural heritage at the Foreign Ministry, in the framework of the International Day against Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property, established by UNESCO.
Chancellor De la Fuente handed over to the authorities of the Ministry of Culture and INAH these cultural objects, recovered by Mexican embassies and consulates abroad, which are part of our country’s heritage in accordance with the Federal Law on Archaeological, Artistic and Historic Monuments and Zones.
De la Fuente pointed out that the restitution of such assets is essential to better understand our past, to value our present and to build, from it, a richer, fairer and more equitable future that will significantly nurture the process of transformation of the national public life.
Faced with the challenge posed by the illicit trafficking of cultural property, the Chancellor called on the international community to strengthen cooperation to guarantee the historical heritage of each country for the benefit of future generations, since, he said, this phenomenon is the third most lucrative illicit market globally, surpassed only by drug and arms trafficking.
