Mexico celebrates the release of the two Mexican nationals who were part of the crew of the ship “Galaxy Leader” / @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- The Government of Mexico informs that today, in Muscat, Oman, the Mexican nationals Marcos Gómez Jerez and Arturo Alberto Zacarías Meza, members of the crew of the cargo ship ‘Galaxy Leader’, kidnapped by Yemeni Houthi militants on November 19, 2023, were released.

The nationals were received by the Mexican ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Aníbal Gómez Toledo, and by staff of that diplomatic representation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs celebrates the return to our country of Marcos Gómez Jerez and Arturo Alberto Zacarías Meza.

Since the capture of the ship, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) deployed an intense diplomatic activity to obtain its release through negotiations and contacts with the intermediation of governments of friendly countries, including Oman, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, as well as the United Nations (UN) and the International Committee of the Red Cross, which contributed to facilitate communication with the Hutí representatives.

Likewise, permanent contact was maintained with their families, who were provided with information and support throughout the process.

As a result of these efforts, both nationals were allowed frequent and direct telephone communication with their families and the Honorary Consul of Mexico in Yemen was authorized access to the detainees, who verified their good health and ensured that they were treated with dignity.

It is important to mention that the Houthi leadership had conditioned the release of the crew of the “Galaxy Leader” -including both nationals- to a ceasefire and an improvement of the conditions in Gaza, so the agreement reached between Israel and Hamas facilitated their release.
