#IMSS.- As part of the strategies aimed at the detection and timely care of congenital heart disease, since 2023, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), through the PediatrIMSS program, has been carrying out cardiac screening in 142 Second Level Units and in the 5 High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE) that attend births.
In commemoration of World Congenital Heart Disease Day, which is celebrated today, February 14, Dr. Mauricio Daniel León Yépez, a pediatric cardiologist attached to the 3rd Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of the National Medical Center (CMN) La Raza, explained that cardiac screening is a non-invasive method that is performed between 24 hours of life and 72 hours after birth.
He added that congenital heart defects are the most frequent malformations in Mexico and in the Institute and are the second cause of morbidity and mortality in the population under five years of age, and they are also the second cause of stay in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU).
The pediatric cardiologist pointed out that the heart diseases most frequently treated are those where there is a hole in the wall that separates the ventricles from the heart, another one is where there is an opening in the septum that separates the atria from the myocardium, when the arterial duct does not close after birth and the defect that occurs when the aorta and the pulmonary artery are inverted.
He explained that their diagnosis can be made before or after birth; another method to identify any of these diseases is through prenatal ultrasound due to its high sensitivity and specificity; follow-up will depend on the type of heart disease present, some of these conditions require immediate treatment and others improve with medical attention.
Follow-up will depend on the patient’s evolution and the decision on surgical intervention or pediatric hemodynamic management will be made according to the comprehensive evaluation given to each patient, he said.
