UNAM and SRE launch platform to support migrants in the United States, “Acción Migrante” / @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- As a result of the general collaboration agreement signed last December by Rector Leonardo Lomelí and Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente, the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today present the UNAM Platform, Acción Migrante, which offers online orientation and support to Mexican migrants living in the United States or returning to Mexico.

The accionmigrante.unam.mx platform provides migrants with assistance in two main areas: psychological and legal orientation, provided by UNAM specialists. The five branches of the University in the United States (Los Angeles, Tucson, San Antonio, Chicago and Boston) and the northwest station of the Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas, in Tijuana, as well as the Mexican Consular Network in the United States, composed of 53 offices, participate in the project.

UNAM, Acción Migrante is a user-friendly site where migrants can easily access and request help and/or support from personnel specialized in the aforementioned disciplines. The platform represents a first approach in a strategic collaboration in favor of migrants between both institutions. It will be enriched and extended in the weeks to come.

Psychological care will be provided to migrants who require it, who are on either side of the border, once they have been assessed remotely by university specialists. The aim is to assist people going through emotional crises. From the platform, the migrant can be channeled to a professional to call, receive legal advice and information about shelters or participate in the program through WhatsApp messages.

At the same time, the legal orientation offers primarily the necessary information to migrants so that they have sufficient elements to assert their rights within the United States and avoid being victims of abuse -them or their families-, by immigration agents or police. Through messages coordinated between both institutions, Mexican nationals will receive timely guidance on how to act in the event that their family has been divided, what to do with their assets after deportation, or in the event that they decide to return to our country, where they will always be welcomed.
