Mexico and Norway promote a coalition to defend multilateral cooperation / @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- Enrique Ochoa, Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Andreas Motzfeld Kravik, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Norway, met at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to hold consultations on multilateral issues.

During the meeting, they emphasized the importance of a functioning multilateral system and a world order based on international law, both for their national interests and to defend progressive norms and standards in the areas of gender and human rights, the environment, and international peace and security.

Both officials agreed that only the UN has the mandate, legitimacy, and infrastructure to exercise this leadership. The United Nations system is facing severe funding cuts, as well as a changing geopolitical context. The UN will have to adapt to these new circumstances.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations has launched the UN80 initiative, which envisions a profound reform process to maintain the organization’s global leadership.

Mexico and Norway support the Secretary-General’s efforts and expect profound and bold changes in the organization, as well as innovative approaches that adapt the UN to a new financing landscape.

Reforms will be promoted that preserve the UN’s role as the primary forum for debate, policy design, and legitimacy for collective decisions. Multilateral responses are essential to addressing the pressing challenges facing humanity, such as conflict, climate change, and poverty eradication.
Reforms will be promoted to ensure that the UN is able to effectively support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Future Compact on the ground, as well as maintain the global humanitarian system.
For these reforms to be successful, they require the broad support of UN Member States. Therefore, Mexico and Norway will establish a dialogue with countries from all regions, as it will be essential to transcend our regional groups to consolidate support for the required reforms.
