#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), through its Mental Health and Addictions Coordination Office, reaffirms its commitment to the comprehensive mental health of its members by promoting well-being and quality of life satisfaction. To this end, it is strengthening its human resources, optimizing care to reduce wait times, and implementing various strategies in this area.
The Project Leader of the Mental Health and Addictions Services Division, Professor Angélica Eliosa Hernández, reported that during 2024, the IMSS recorded 336 first-time mental health consultations per 100,000 members over the age of 20 and 370 consultations per 100,000 members under the age of 20.
She explained that the Institute’s primary care model includes mental health screenings at the PrevenIMSS modules, located in Family Medicine Units (FMUs), to detect and address mental health problems in a timely manner.
“As part of its commitments, the Mental Health and Addictions Coordination is working on a mental health care improvement plan. This plan not only strengthens human resources but also seeks to optimize existing resources to reduce delays and wait times for appointments, thus enabling increasingly timely care,” she added.
The psychology specialist emphasized that Social Security currently has 535 psychologists focused on mental health care for beneficiaries and 133 for Social Security workers.
