Foreign Minister de la Fuente receives Olmec artifact as part of Mexico’s ongoing efforts to recover its cultural heritage / @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the Ministry of Culture, through the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), will strengthen and strengthen ties of cooperation in the fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural property and for the restitution of Mexican cultural heritage located abroad. This was demonstrated today with the delivery of an Olmec artifact of great historical and archaeological importance, which was recovered by the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles.

At the National Museum of Anthropology, Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente and the Director General of the INAH, Diego Prieto, met in the context of the restitution of this pre-Hispanic clay artifact with typical features of the Olmec culture. It was produced in the Mexican Central Highlands between 800 and 400 BC (Puebla-Morelos). It represents a seated male figure with a deformed skull, a bare torso, and a loincloth.

De la Fuente stated that in the first months of this administration, through the Legal Counsel’s Office, 2,042 archaeological pieces have been recovered, which constitutes a good effort that also demonstrates the potential we have to continue bringing pieces that are part of the national heritage back to their place of origin, from where they should never have left.

He highlighted President Claudia Sheinbaum’s commitment to these recovery efforts, as well as the instructions she has given to continue the program and expand it through the participation of the consular network and diplomatic representations abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (SRE) also has 417 pieces under its care to be delivered to the INAH, as well as 96 pieces that have been recovered by various Mexican representations abroad and are in the process of being sent to the country.

INAH Director General Diego Prieto noted that more than 14,000 artifacts were repatriated during the previous six-year term, and that the majority of the items returned during the current administration came from the United States.
