#GobiernoDeMéxico.- President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized the importance of all Mexicans participating in the June 1st elections to elect their judges and justices of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), as this is the only way to clean up the judiciary and thereby demonstrate that Mexico is the most democratic country in the world.
“It’s a historic election; it’s the first time the judiciary will be elected in Mexico, and it’s also an example to the world. But having the people decide who their judges is something that, at this level of participation and openness, I think is unmatched anywhere else in the world. So, it’s a watershed in Mexico’s history and an example to the world that Mexico is the most democratic country of all, for one reason: because in Mexico, it’s the people who decide. So, it’s very important that we all participate, everyone, without exception, everyone go out and vote on June 1st,” he emphasized during the morning press conference, “The People’s Morning Conference.”
He asserted that the fact that the people are the ones who elect their judges makes the election historic, as it democratizes a process in which, before the reform of the judiciary, the Presidency proposed and the Senate decided.
“It’s the only way to clean up the judiciary, for the people to decide. Participation is very important, and the fact that we were allowed to broadcast on June 1st is very important. Let no one forget, June 1st is the day of the judiciary election; it’s very important that we all participate,” she added.
The Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez, recalled that the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judicial Branch (TEPJF) modified the agreement issued by the General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE), which approved the criteria that guarantee fairness and impartiality in the conduct of campaigns and the electoral ban for the extraordinary electoral process of the Federal Judicial Branch. It concluded that the INE had improperly determined itself to be the sole authority with exclusive powers to promote voting and citizen participation, since such restrictions are not expressly provided for in the law and are contrary to the Constitution.
