#ISSSTE.- On International Nurses Day, commemorated on May 12, the Director General of the Institute of Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE), Martí Batres Guadarrama, recognized the work of 32,792 ISSSTE nurses in President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s morning press conference, «The People’s Morning Conference,» whose professionalism and dedication are fundamental to the health strategy promoted by the Second Level of the Fourth Transformation.
“Nursing is a very important strategy for coordinating health, care, and social security, because caring is not a private act; it is a public policy, and in this case, it is a State strategy. (…) Nursing is a profession, nursing is territory, it is care. Nursing is a profession that accompanies the entire life cycle, from birth to death, from full health to chronic illness, from the doctor’s office to the home. Without nursing, hospitals don’t function, but without nursing, prevention doesn’t work either,” he said.
Accompanied by the Secretary of Health of the Government of Mexico, David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz, Martí Batres emphasized that the work of the country’s nursing staff is also scientific, because, through practice situated in complex realities, it generates essential knowledge.
“Nurses not only provide care, they also research, think, innovate, and produce knowledge. (…) Increasingly, nursing is developing postgraduate studies. Its knowledge is scientific, rooted in practice and in so-called community knowledge,” he said.
Finally, the ISSSTE director general explained that of the total nursing staff at the Institute, 82 percent are women and 18 percent are men.
