The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNAM, and the Norwegian Embassy join forces to promote a culture of peace / @SRE_mx >>>
#MinistryofForeignAffairs, #Mexico.- After signing, as an honorary witness, along with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, the Letter of Intent to promote collaboration on a culture of peace between the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Norwegian Center for Conflict Resolution (NOREF), and the Norwegian Embassy in Mexico, UNAM Rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas emphasized that the value of this agreement lies in its vision for the future and its ability to demonstrate that academia, diplomacy, and international cooperation can come together to offer solutions to problems that affect us all.
In this sense, the National University fully understands and believes that public and autonomous education involves the development of critical, empathetic, and supportive citizens; it cannot be limited to the transmission of knowledge, he added.
This effort, the UNAM Rector explained, is based on a fundamental principle: peace is a collective and dynamic construction. If violence can be learned, it can also be unlearned. If confrontation persists, we can also create environments where cooperation, respect, and tolerance prevail. In this context, public education must become a starting point that contributes to driving this political and cultural transformation.
He recalled that we live in a historical period characterized by tensions and fractures that run through entire societies. Polarization, fueled by hate speech and misinformation, has taken root in public spaces, weakening social trust and eroding democratic life.
