IMSS Boosts Altruistic Blood Donation Across Mexico / @zoerobledo @Tu_IMSS >>>
#MexicanSocialSecurityInstitute, #Mexico.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is steadfast in its pledge to secure the timely and safe access to blood transfusions for millions of beneficiaries. It is therefore vigorously promoting extramural altruistic blood donation drives across the nation, targeting universities, workplaces, and both private and public institutions. This critical effort underscores the IMSS’s commitment to public health, guaranteeing that lifesaving blood is readily available whenever needed.
Dr Gamaliel Benítez Arvizu, Director of the Blood Bank at the Siglo XXI National Medical Centre (CMN), highlighted the significant achievements of these campaigns throughout 2024. The drives successfully registered 1,845 altruistic donor candidates, both from within the institution and through external outreach efforts. From this considerable number of volunteers, a vital 800 to 900 optimal blood units were ultimately collected for patient care.
Safety remains the paramount concern, as the specialised staff must ensure that every potential donor meets strict criteria before proceeding. Dr Benítez Arvizu explained: “The priority is to protect both the donor and the recipient, ensuring that every transfused unit is safe and of the highest quality.” This rigorous vetting process, conducted by clinical pathologists, ensures that not all candidates can become donors, upholding the integrity of the entire transfusion process.
The IMSS views these mobile drives as a key part of its National Health Promotion Strategy, aiming not only to increase blood reserves but also to foster a culture of voluntary, regular, and informed donation. Dr Benítez Arvizu powerfully concluded: “Blood cannot be manufactured; it is only obtained through people’s solidarity.” By using mobile units and providing pre-event information sessions, the IMSS is making it simpler for the public to answer this essential call and become a vital link in the chain of survival.
