#MinistryofForeignAffairs#Mexico.-  Just 210 days before the inaugural match of the 2026 Football World Cup, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) hosted the first briefing session for Embassies regarding the tournament in Mexico. Held in collaboration with Gabriela Cuevas, Mexico’s representative for the 2026 World Cup, and FIFA, the meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration between the Mexican Government and the accredited diplomatic corps.

The gathering emphasised that the 2026 World Cup will be the largest in history, representing not just a sporting event but also a milestone for North American cooperation. For the first time, three nations—Mexico, the United States, and Canada—are uniting efforts with FIFA to host the world’s most important football tournament.

Mexican Government and FIFA officials provided Embassies with crucial information covering consular and migratory requirements for travel to Mexico, social communication strategies, and protocol. Discussions also focused on security and protection measures for dignitaries, visitors, and national teams throughout the competition.

Emphasis was placed on Mexico’s vast organisational experience gained from hosting the 1970 and 1986 World Cups and the 1968 Olympic Games. The country is well-prepared to welcome all attendees, including heads of state attending the World Cup’s 11th June 2026 inauguration at the Estadio Ciudad de México, the only venue in history to host three opening matches.

Furthermore, the SRE highlighted that, through sports diplomacy, Mexico strengthens its bonds of friendship and understanding with other nations, promoting dialogue, inclusion, and cultural and tourism exchanges. The country, already one of the most visited globally, anticipates between five and six million additional tourists during the tournament next year.

The informative session successfully engaged over 70 countries, with key participation from officials including Roberto Velasco, Undersecretary for North America, Gabriela Cuevas, and representatives from the Defence, Navy, and Migration Secretariats, demonstrating a comprehensive governmental commitment to the event’s success.
