Mexico’s Welfare Drive Marks Major Shift as Millions Lifted Out of Poverty, According to Latest Government Briefing / @A_MontielR @bienestarmx
#SecretariatOfWellbeing, #Mexico.– In the context of the First Government Report for the Second Phase of the Fourth Transformation, the welfare policy, guided by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, is consolidating itself as the fundamental pillar of the Republic and of Mexican Humanism. The Secretary of Welfare, Ariadna Montiel Reyes, told the Chamber of Deputies that the principle «for the good of all, the poor first» has delivered «clear» results: between 2018 and 2024, 13.4 million people have been lifted out of poverty, confirming that the transformation is advancing along the «correct path».
During her address, Montiel Reyes explained that the success in reducing poverty and inequality — which fell from 0.426 to 0.391 on the Gini scale — is the direct outcome of a formula combining economic and social policies. She emphasised that historic wage recovery, with a 125% increase in the minimum wage since 2018, together with a comprehensive social protection system, has been decisive. This system is embodied in the Welfare Programmes, which provide a basic income in households and have contributed to a real increase of 16% in household income.
The Welfare Secretary underlined that total social investment has reached 850 billion pesos, benefiting more than 32 million people with a Welfare Programme to date. She added that in this first year, social justice and access to rights have been expanded through new schemes, including the Welfare Pension for Women Aged 60 to 64. This initiative, which «materialises the expression ‘we all arrived'», acknowledges the contribution of Mexican women and is set to invest 23.662 billion pesos in 2025, benefiting nearly three million women.
In the health sector, the Health House by House programme is emerging as one of the most significant prevention and primary care schemes worldwide, offering free home medical consultations. It began with a health census for older adults and people with disabilities, and to date has invested 4.757 billion pesos to deliver more than 8.15 million personalised medical consultations. In addition, the Welfare Pension for Older Adults guarantees a dignified old age for 13.3 million beneficiaries, providing 6,200 pesos every two months.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening these programmes. The Pension for People with Disabilities, which benefits more than 1.6 million individuals, is already available from birth to age 64 in 24 states, thanks to collaboration with state governments. The progress is evident, as «the results are clear, progress is being made with the legitimacy born of the people’s trust and of governing for everyone from the territory».
