IMSS reinforces its work in transplants and blood donor recruitment for the benefit of pediatric oncology patients
#InstitutoMexicanoDelSeguroSocial.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has reinforced its work in organ transplants and in the recruitment of altruistic donors for blood components for the benefit of pediatric oncology patients treated in the institution’s medical units, authorities informed the mothers and fathers of children with cancer.
During the seventy-seventh meeting of the working group, Dr. Enrique López Aguilar, coordinator of Oncology Care, pointed out that the IMSS State Reference Centers for the Care of Children with Cancer (ONCOCREAN) offer a better chance of life for children with cancer.
In a virtual session, he explained that the most frequent type of cancer and with the greatest possibilities of cure are leukemias in pediatric age, for which it is necessary to follow a protocol with support therapy, adequate treatments and constant training of the health personnel who attend them.
Lopez Aguilar indicated that 20 percent of children with leukemia can relapse due to various adverse factors, in spite of having a good treatment and support unit; in these cases, they are offered the opportunity of a transplant in those cases whose indication allows it, and obtain a new chance of cure.
