AMLO proposes not to prosecute Ecuadorian official of Mexican origin for assault on Mexican embassy / @lopezobrador_ @GobiernoMX >>>

#GobiernoDeMéxico.- The Minister of Government of Ecuador, Monica Palencia, with Mexican nationality, will not be tried in the country for treason after the assault on the Mexican embassy carried out by Ecuadorian police forces last Friday, April 5, said President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

«Yes, he is being asked to be tried. My opinion is that no, that is, that we should not act like that (…) They are asking us to consider her as a traitor to the homeland. No, no, we cannot act in the same way», he stressed in a morning press conference.

In a morning press conference, the President said that he is even considering modifications to Article 33 of the Constitution which speaks of expulsion «for being a pernicious foreigner; no, that is not».

The President presented a video of Minister Palencia in which she assures that she was not part of the decision, execution or any other act subsequent to the illegal breaking in of the Mexican representation, arguing that this would mean «a conflict of interest» for having both nationalities.

«It is interesting what she raises. Besides, the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister has already declared that the order was given by the President (Daniel Noboa)», pointed out the Chief Executive.

Before representatives of the media, he reiterated that the Government of Mexico never had the intention of facilitating the escape of the former Vice President of Ecuador, Jorge David Glas Espinel, a guest staying at the Mexican Embassy.

In this regard, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, explained that last December, Glas formally requested political asylum, for which the Mexican government was in the process of analyzing his legal situation in Ecuador when police forces illegally detained the former vice president inside the Mexican embassy.
