#IMSS.- So far this year, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has performed 1,267 organ transplants, thanks to which it has been possible to save lives, restore functions and improve the quality of life of patients.

On this June 6, World Day of Transplant Patients, the Social Security reported that in 2021, 1,791 patients were transplanted in its various medical units, in 2022, 2,926, and in 2023, a total of 3,392.

«Organ, tissue and cell transplants transform lives. They save the lives of those on the brink of death, restore the function of organs that are dysfunctional, improve quality of life, turn loss into hope and form deep bonds between strangers,” said the Directorate of Medical Benefits (DPM).

It reported that, of the total number of transplants performed this year, 576 have been kidney, 504 cornea, 142 hematopoietic cell, 35 liver, eight heart and two lung transplants.

Currently, Social Security has three heart transplant programs, two lung transplant programs, seven liver transplant programs, 19 kidney transplant programs, 12 cornea transplant programs and eight hematopoietic cell transplant programs.

“The patient with organ failure is evaluated at the second level medical units and is referred to the different transplant programs to start the study protocol and, if he/she is in a condition to be transplanted, he/she is registered on the waiting list for a donor organ,” said the DPM.
