Mexico works to strengthen the national steel industry / @aliciabarcena @SRE_mx >>>
#SRE.- In relation to the proclamation issued by President Joseph Biden regarding the measures to be implemented by the U.S. government on steel imports from Mexico, the Mexican government informs that an important bilateral agreement has been reached to avoid affecting the Mexican steel industry.
The new melting and casting requirements that steel imports from Mexico will have to comply with establish that, in order to enter the United States duty free, steel imports must be melted and cast in North America.
However, an agreement was reached with the United States to design a mechanism so that Brazilian steel transformed in Mexico will not be subject to tariffs; that is, the casting and pouring requirements will not apply to products coming from that country. This would fulfill the commitments of both countries under the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (T-MEC), which indicates that as of 2027 all steel exported to the United States will be poured and cast in North America.
With this action, the Government of Mexico reiterates its commitment to the defense of national interests.
