#ISSSTE.- As part of the celebration of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, the exhibition “Images, Languages and Textiles” was inaugurated in the gallery of the central offices of the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (Issste), with the aim of promoting the importance of maintaining the cultural richness of the native peoples of all regions of Mexico.

The Director of Economic, Social and Cultural Benefits, Yezmín Lehmann Mendoza, pointed out that through color, textures and photographs, the country’s multiculturalism is increasingly being disseminated and respect for the communities, who seek to preserve their traditions, is being promoted.

The exhibition features 20 costumes from the states of Chiapas, Guerrero, Michoacán, Oaxaca and Sonora. Here different techniques of each textile are shown, as well as their iconography and the use given to them in ceremonies, so that visitors can appreciate the work and quality with which these everyday pieces are made, which are part of the identity and knowledge of the communities that remain in different generations.

The exhibition exhibits part of the photographic collection of George O Jackson, who has documented for several years the traditions of some indigenous peoples.

The head of the Collections Department of the National Museum of Popular Cultures, Estefanía Espinoza Aguilar, indicated that the importance of preserving clothing is because it is a reflection of the cultural identity of each people, since the costumes represent symbols of belonging and the transmission of knowledge from generation to generation. Therefore, it is essential to safeguard the textile heritage.
