#IMSS.- The exhibition “Weaving a local history. Gobelinos de Xonacatlán”, an exhibition of 29 works by renowned Mexican and foreign artists, 27 of which belong to the collection of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the State of Mexico.
Gisela Mendoza Jiménez, Technical Coordinator of Cultural Development of the Mexican Social Security Institute, at the opening of the exhibition said that part of the work that gives meaning to the IMSS is to seek the emotional, social, physical and intellectual health of its beneficiaries and society as a whole.
He explained that the exhibition, which will be open to the public free of charge until November 1, includes 29 works related to the initiative of French artist Danielle Laillé (1946-2023), who found in Mexico a popular artistic and artisanal capacity and implemented the low-warp gobelin technique in the town of Xonacatlán, State of Mexico.
He pointed out that the contribution of designs by several artists from the second half of the 20th century gave rise to an alliance that made possible the creation of these tapestries, now in the custody of institutions from the State of Mexico, Michoacán and private collectors.
For his part, José Antonio Espinosa Lopez, head of the Exhibitions Area of the Cultural Development Division of the IMSS, curator of the exhibition, indicated that the weavers of Xonacatlán, of Otomí origin, created these works between 1971 and 1979, after learning the French gobelin technique with Danielle Laillé, at the Tapestry Weavers’ Center of that town in the State of Michoacán.
