#IMSS.- For the promotion of breastfeeding and its benefits, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has 126 breastfeeding rooms in medical units with gynecology-obstetrics care and 76 breastfeeding rooms in Family Medicine Units, dignified spaces that benefit mothers and their babies.
Elvira Elvia Escobar Beristain, Coordinator of Family Planning and Breastfeeding Medical Programs at IMSS, during her participation in the “Forum on Best Practices for Breastfeeding in the Workplace”, pointed out that the aim is for the woman and her baby to feel comfortable, in a clean place and with the support of health personnel.
These areas, she recalled, are part of the Hospital Amigo del Niño y de la Niña initiative, where the breastfeeding rooms were originally created, a private place where users can breastfeed or express their milk.
She indicated that in order for a medical unit to achieve the nomination as Baby and Child Friendly Hospital, 10 points are worked on for three years, aimed at promoting breastfeeding, learning about the benefits of this food for the mother and her baby, mainly in terms of immunity, allergies and avoiding obesity and hypertension.
Erika Hernandez Hernandez, head of the Technical Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, said that the current regulations promote two spaces for women to feed their children.
She said that these are two breaks, of half an hour each, which must be practiced in safe, hygienic and adequate spaces, although in cases where there is no place for this, and always through dialogue, the working day may be reduced by one hour to exercise this right, in accordance with the Federal Labor Law.
