It is imperative to achieve sanitary self-sufficiency in the Americas: Alicia Bárcena / @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, participated today in the segment “Prospects of the Americas for the construction of health self-sufficiency”, within the framework of the XI Conference of the Pan American Network for the Harmonization of Pharmaceutical Regulation (CPARF).

In her speech, the Chancellor said that the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that it is imperative to continue strengthening health systems in Latin America and the Caribbean, in order to move towards health self-sufficiency in the region, through greater integration and coordination at the regional level to create their own capacities for the development and production of vaccines, medicines and medical devices.

“It is urgent to strengthen health systems at the regional level […] in Mexico, there is an opportunity for reindustrialization and relocation to provide greater access to health, articulating complete value chains in pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, to position health systems,” she said.

Secretary Bárcena stressed that “all countries are seeking universal access health policies; if we form an alliance between the scientific, technological, pharmaceutical and productive sectors, we can make great progress”. In this sense, she remarked that the starting point for developing a regional strategy is to harmonize regulatory systems, as well as to generate coordination and governance mechanisms.

“What we are looking for is a Sanitary Self-Sufficiency Plan that guarantees a stable market, strengthens research and development in the region and facilitates local production. It is very important to strengthen local production, regional chains and develop our own products, to improve access to vaccines and medicines in general,” he emphasized.
