#ISSSTE.- Regular access to pap smears or PCR tests from the age of 25 is the best strategy to prevent cervical cancer. For this reason, the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (Issste) is intensifying actions for timely diagnosis and treatment in medical units throughout the country.
As part of Cervical Cancer Awareness Week, which will take place from August 26 to 30 throughout the country, the institute’s medical director, Ramiro López Elizalde, reported that the early detection program is focused on prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and multidisciplinary follow-up for at-risk female beneficiaries.
“At the institute, three studies are performed: pap smears, PCR and colposcopy, with the aim of providing timely identification to reduce waiting times, making them more accessible and convenient for patients. If necessary, timely referral to the dysplasia and/or colposcopy clinics is expedited.”
During this week and with the slogan: “For an Issste without cervical cancer,” the institute has the goal of performing more than five thousand human papillomavirus (HPV) screening tests and cytologies in 64 units of the three levels of care, she added.
The head of the Department of Programs for Chronic-Degenerative Diseases, Anel Arellano Tejeda, pointed out that, according to the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), this disease is the second leading cause of death in 52 countries, including Mexico, and is mainly associated with HPV infection https://goo.su/LttB9mU.
