Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena holds virtual meeting with Haiti’s Prime Minister / @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, held a virtual meeting today with the Prime Minister of Haiti, Garry Conille, to analyze the bilateral relationship in the transition period that the Caribbean country is going through.

At the meeting, the Foreign Minister reiterated Mexico’s willingness to continue accompanying and supporting the peacebuilding process in Haiti in order to contribute to institutional strengthening, economic development and the implementation of social programs to meet the needs of the population.

Secretary Bárcena also reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to continue strengthening cooperation through programs such as training for Haitian security forces provided by the Ministry of National Defense, and initiatives in agriculture, climate change resilience and humanitarian aid.

For his part, Prime Minister Conille detailed the priorities of his government program, which include responding to the security crisis; strengthening justice and the rule of law; economic reactivation; and the public communication strategy. She also highlighted the importance of Latin American and Caribbean support for the transition process in Haiti, and thanked Mexico for the solidarity shown to the Caribbean country.

The Secretary and the Prime Minister also agreed on the need to join efforts against illegal arms trafficking as part of a comprehensive regional security strategy.

The officials agreed to meet during the high-level week of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), to be held from September 22 to 28 in New York, during which the Prime Minister will promote initiatives for comprehensive cooperation with Haiti.
