#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) promotes personal, oral, hand, food and water hygiene among its beneficiaries, as well as in the surroundings and environment, due to their importance in disease prevention.

Within the framework of World Hygiene Day, which is commemorated on September 3, the IMSS Nursing Programs Coordinator, Gehazul Palacios Torres, indicated that it is a set of practices and measures aimed at preserving health through cleanliness and proper handling of the environment and the body, including regular bathing, hair and nail care, consumption of drinking water, clean food and areas free of garbage.

He stressed that poor hygiene creates an environment conducive to the proliferation of pathogens and is associated with diarrheal, food, water and vector-borne diseases (dengue, zika); respiratory infections, skin, soft tissue and seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff), among others.

He added that the most affected are three population groups in which the risk of disease increases: children and adolescents, people in emergency situations due to conflicts or natural disasters in precarious conditions, and patients with chronic or immunocompromised diseases.

For this reason, he said, Social Security promotes various strategies and programs, including health education campaigns that include the promotion of personal, dental and food hygiene. These periodic campaigns highlight the importance of hand washing and the prevention of infectious diseases, providing essential information on proper hygiene and personal care practices to improve the general health of the population.

He emphasized that, at the PrevenIMSS Modules, the nursing staff provides guidance on essential practices such as daily bathing, tooth brushing, nutrition and disease prevention to the entitled beneficiaries. This guidance is provided in both individual and group sessions, covering all age groups.

In addition, school hygiene is promoted in daycare centers through the educational program of the ChiquitIMSS strategy. This program provides guidance to children on issues of personal care and nutrition, and is extended to schools at various educational levels to highlight the importance of personal and environmental cleanliness.
