Tires are an excellent product for recycling: Secretariat of the Environment and Sustainable Development / @SICT_mx >>>

EEstadoDeMéxico.- Due to the increase of tires in streets, ravines, rivers and sewers, the Government of the State of Mexico, headed by Mrs. Delfina Gómez Álvarez, calls, through the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development (SMAyDS), to generate a new ecological awareness, based on environmental education for a correct disposal of solid waste.

Tires are considered Special Handling Waste and their disposal represents an environmental, public health, technical and economic problem. According to the National Chamber of the Rubber Industry, 70 percent of domestic tires and 100 percent of imported tires are an excellent product for recycling and can be converted into raw material for asphalt, athletic tracks and rugs, among other products.

Recycling tires benefits in the reduction of waste, energy savings, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and reduction of water use.

Tire recycling can be done by two processes: Pyrolysis, a technique that consists of burning the tires without oxygen, the recovery of the materials that compose them is 100 percent and the recovered materials can be reused in other industrial processes or even in the manufacture of new tires; and Shredding, which is based on grinding the tires until different particle sizes are obtained.

Tire recycling, besides being used to create new tires thanks to rubber and other materials, can have other uses such as: sealing products with cracks, holes or perforations; producing waterproofing for roofs and walls; manufacturing tiles, pavers, flagstones and construction materials; building athletic tracks, courts and balls; repairing asphalt on battered streets, and making shoe soles.

The benefits of proper tire treatment include a reduction in the use of petroleum from 23.5 liters to 13.05 liters per tire, less than half the carbon dioxide emitted, and savings of more than 1,000 liters of water per tire.
