A new development model is essential to meet the challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean / @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- To face the challenges faced by Latin America and the Caribbean, an integral and innovative development model based on principles of social justice and progress is fundamental, highlighted representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), CAF-Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM), during the inauguration of the international seminar “Rethinking the development of Latin America and the Caribbean from Mexico”, at the Foreign Ministry’s headquarters.

At the opening of the event, which was attended by the Chancellor Alicia Bárcena Ibarra; the Rector General of the UAM, José Antonio De los Reyes Heredia; the Rector of the UAM Xochimilco, Francisco Javier Soria López; and the Corporate Vice President of Strategic Programming of CAF, Christian Asinelli, it was emphasized that these dialogues aim to address the main economic, social and environmental challenges of the region.

For three days, renowned academics, former officials and specialists will share their perspectives and formulate proposals for viable policies in a multidimensional dialogue that will address issues such as low GDP growth, environmental impacts, inequality and the fragmentation of the global economy.

In her speech, Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena said that the seminar seeks to generate “an urgent debate and analyze different perspectives to visualize alternative paths for the sustainable and fair development of Latin America and the Caribbean […] a great regional transformation will only be possible if we pay attention to the challenges we are facing in our countries, in economic, social and environmental terms”.

In this sense, he stressed that “it is not only about addressing poverty, it is about addressing distribution, that is what is implied in finding an alternative model, not only focusing on poverty, but also understanding how we can better redistribute the resources that this region has […] how we can densify local productive chains, how we can stabilize public and private investments among us”.
