#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) transformed mental health care by placing it at the center of its policies to provide comprehensive care and wellbeing to its beneficiaries, while modernizing processes, training and updating personnel, shifting to a comprehensive and preventive approach, as well as strengthening community programs.

The head of the Mental Health and Addictions Coordination, Dr. Norma Magdalena Palacios Jiménez, stated that the current administration headed by the IMSS General Director, Zoé Robledo, leaves a legacy of commitment and significant progress in this area by promoting a primary health care model that emphasizes promotion, prevention, social participation, as well as collaboration and liaison with related institutions.

“The model focused on exclusive attention by psychiatry personnel and psychiatric hospitals or mental health centers is a thing of the past; the idea is that the entire health team should know and address the issue, have the tools so that when the user population comes to request a service, we can provide preventive actions and comprehensive care, from first psychological help, brief interventions and appropriate guidance in this area,” he emphasized.

With regard to infrastructure, he explained that as of October 2023, work is being carried out to create spaces within the hospital medical units to provide adequate and comprehensive care for people with mental health conditions, particularly for suicidal behavior in children, adolescents and adults.

He said that the continuous education of institutional personnel is promoted through various courses that favor the development of the necessary skills in this area and that are housed in institutional platforms such as CLIMSS, the one belonging to the Coordination of Health Education and strategic allies such as the Pan American Health Organization and the IMSS-Bienestar Health Services.

He emphasized that the integration of mental health in health plans and programs and the promotion of a preventive approach have been fundamental pillars of our strategy, in addition to working directly with the population to detect and provide timely treatment that reintegrates people to continue with their activities in the best conditions.
