#ISSSTE.- The Director General of the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (Issste), Bertha Alcalde Luján, inaugurated an accelerator specialized in radiosurgery at the Centro Médico Nacional (CMN) “20 de Noviembre” and supervised the recent upgrade of three linear accelerators to treat different cancer-related pathologies, making it possible to provide care to more than 1,900 new patients a year.

The head of the institute pointed out that the radiosurgery equipment is intended for patients with breast cancer, brain and central nervous system tumors, essentially.

She explained that the unit has high-end radiosurgery equipment to treat lesions smaller than four centimeters, both benign and malignant, with millimetric precision, with fewer sessions (reducing from 40 to only five in selected cases). It avoids damaging healthy tissue, which represents a breakthrough in treatments.

“I am very pleased to be here and to inaugurate the four accelerators, with which we will expand care for those suffering from cancer. In addition, we will be able to attend 70 percent of oncology patients who require radiotherapy treatment.

She informed that the equipment involved the investment of more than 400 million pesos, reflected in 35 thousand radiotherapy sessions per year, and reported that the three accelerators put into operation in 2018 have attended more than 10 thousand patients, with a total of 180 thousand sessions.
