Mexico welcomes adoption of UN Assembly resolution on Israel-Palestine conflict >>>

#International.- The Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, welcomed the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the resolution demanding that the Israeli government cease its occupation of Palestine within a maximum of 12 months.

The Foreign Ministry noted that it marks an important step towards the implementation of the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the “Legal Consequences Arising from Israeli Practices and Policies in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem”.

This resolution, among other actions, contemplates the convening of an international conference during the upcoming 79th UN General Assembly to advance the implementation of UN resolutions regarding Palestine and the two-state solution.

In a press release, the agency called on all parties involved to comply with this resolution on the basis of constructive dialogue and in good faith.

It pointed out that Mexico recognizes the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, while reiterating its support for the two-state formula, Palestine and Israel, as the basis for achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.

The resolution was debated since Tuesday by the 193 member states of the UN.

The non-legally binding text, prepared by Palestine, is based on an advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice in July, which stressed that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is illegal and that Israel has an obligation to immediately cease any new settlement activity and to evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The resolution passed by a vote of 124 in favor, 14 against and 43 abstentions, “demands” that Israel “terminate without delay its illegal presence” in the Palestinian territories and that it do so “no later than 12 months after the adoption of the resolution.”
