Promoting a humanistic ecological and environmental policy is fundamental to generate prosperity: Alicia Bárcena / @SRE_mx >>>
#SRE.– The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, participated today in the presentation of the Socio-environmental Agenda 2024: diagnoses and proposals, which analyzes nine issues of urgent attention for the future Administration: water, forest regions, biodiversity, energy, mining, agri-food system, highly hazardous pesticides, waste and agrarian governance.
The Agenda states that although there have been positive advances in the Administration that concludes in October, the trend of environmental degradation stemming from past administrations continues and is deepening due to various factors, including climate change.
In her speech, the Chancellor pointed out that “what interests us is a humanist ecological and environmental policy: first, that shared prosperity reaches the present and future generations; second, to banish the neoliberal extractivist paradigm that generates inequalities; the right to an environment”.
He stressed that the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador fought inequality and made great progress with social programs. Likewise, he shared that, in Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum’s Administration, welfare will be a priority of her policy and eliminating extreme poverty will be one of her goals. Dr. Sheinbaum is an official with extensive experience in sustainable development and energy, “she comes from the academic and strategic sector, she has an awareness of these issues […] Mexico has a renewable energy goal of 35%, but we want to see if we can increase it and, above all, we have to redefine our commitments in the NDC”.
Secretary Bárcena remarked that biodiversity contributes to well-being, which is why it is necessary to “prevent and repair environmental damage with social participation, restore the natural heritage and protect it”; and presented the National Restoration and Remediation Strategy, which includes rivers and mangroves, as well as the conservation of natural areas and threatened species; productive reforestation and sustainable agriculture; adaptation and mitigation to climate change; sustainable infrastructure and a circular economy.
