#IMSS.- The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) recommended reinforcing hygiene measures to avoid cases of sepsis, in addition to visiting medical units to complete vaccination schedules, promoting breast feeding and paying special attention to any warning signs in children under five years of age and people with alterations in the immune system.
Dr. Alejandro Esquivel Chávez, specialist in Medicine of the Critically Ill, said that sepsis is a disorganized and generalized response of the organism as a consequence of a serious infection; it is one of the most catastrophic events that a patient suffers after having a serious and severe infectious process that can cause the failure of multiple organs.
He pointed out that the main signs and symptoms of this condition are: increased heart rate, high or low temperature, agitated breathing, increase or decrease of white blood cells (defenses) due to the destruction caused by the infection.
He said that approximately 11 million people die worldwide for this reason, a figure that places sepsis among the first 10 causes of death.
He also recommended keeping an eye on older adults, who have a reduced immunological capacity to respond to an infection, as well as on patients who suffer from some process that weakens the defenses, such as diabetes or an immunosuppressive disease, those who take medications to reduce the inflammatory response, those who suffer from HIV or cancer.
