#SECTUR.- The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) recalled that on instructions from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he was entrusted with finding a solution to expedite entry into our country and avoid the recurring “bottlenecks” at the International Airport of Mexico City (AICM) and Cancun, as well as those of Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Tijuana, which represent 90% of international tourism arrivals to Mexico.
He emphasized that, in this sense, the authorities of the Ministries of the Interior, Foreign Affairs, the National Immigration Institute (INM), as well as the presidents of important associations and businessmen of the industry, among them the president of the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, were summoned to Sectur to present the proposal to modify Article 35 of the Immigration Law, with the purpose of allowing the use of automated technological tools to speed up and facilitate the entry to the national territory.
Said proposal was sent through the then president of the Tourism Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, Luis Alegre Salazar (RIP), which was unanimously approved by both Chambers, and published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on April 29, 2022, thus meeting a generalized demand of the sector of more than 25 years.
He indicated that from that moment on, meetings were held with the INM to supervise progress, the Operating Manual was prepared and a pilot plan was implemented at the Cancun airport, where the waiting time was reduced from 2 hours and 45 minutes per person to only 7 minutes during peak hours.
He stated that, as of December 2022, the INM implemented the Autonomous Migration Filters (FMA) at the International Airports of Mexico City and Cancun. As of May 2024, at Los Cabos International Airport and at Guadalajara International Airport as of August 2024; they are also already operating at Puerto Vallarta International Airport.
