#SRE.- The repatriation ceremony of the remains of revolutionary Catarino Garza Rodríguez was led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador yesterday in Matamoros, Tamaulipas.

The event was attended by the Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean, Laura Elena Carrillo Cubillas, representing Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena Ibarra; and the Mexican Ambassador to Chile, Laura Beatriz Moreno Rodríguez, who coordinated the investigation, search and repatriation of the remains of the Mexican revolutionary.

During her speech, Undersecretary Carrillo pointed out that the project to search for and repatriate the remains of Catarino Garza is part of the Mexican Historical and Cultural Memory initiative implemented by President López Obrador, whose purpose is to rescue archives, libraries and newspaper libraries, to recover the names of women and men in the history of our country, whose role has been fundamental in shaping our identity and culture.

“As a nation we are not and will not be complete without every Mexican man and woman whose whereabouts we do not know, that is why we are looking for all of them. Mexico, this Mexico, leaves no one behind,” she said.

The undersecretary stressed that “the search and repatriation was part of a much broader vision of cooperation with sister countries such as Panama.

For her part, Ambassador Laura Moreno said: “I recognize in Catarino Garza a conscious Mexican, who like many others of his time not only denounced, but also took action to fight for freedom, democracy and equality; in the first instance, against the dictatorial regime of Porfirio Diaz, but his scope in the end was of Latin American dimension, a character with a vocation for justice that transcends borders.

Also present at the event were: the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo; the president’s wife, Beatriz Gutiérrez Mueller; the governor of Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal Anaya; the attorney general of the Republic, Alejandro Gertz Manero, as well as Catarino Garza’s descendants.
