#EstadoDeMéxico.- Surgeons from the Toluca Medical Center of the Social Security Institute of the State of Mexico and Municipalities (ISSEMYM), successfully performed a kidney transplant from a deceased person to a beneficiary who was on the national waiting list.
At the age of 10, Jorge Juan Villanueva Delgado, originally from the municipality of Toluca, was diagnosed with chronic renal insufficiency and was a candidate to receive his first kidney transplant at the age of 16; however, his body rejected it.
Six years later, hope returned for the 22-year-old when he was informed by the Transplant Service of the ISSEMYM Medical Center that he could be a candidate to receive an organ from a deceased person.
“I know it is very difficult to make this decision, but you are also giving life to another person and you are making a very big sacrifice; and I thank you from the bottom of my heart, because if it had not been my turn it would have been someone else’s; I thank you for giving me a second chance that I had been waiting for a long time,” he shared after recovering from the operation.
Jorge acknowledged the medical team, surgeons and specialists, as well as the nursing staff who have been attentive to his health, “they have all been very kind and that is what I love about ISSEMYM, they not only have good services, but also nurses and doctors who take good care of you and I like that”.
This highly specialized surgery is in addition to the reactivation of the Transplant Service of the ISSEMYM Medical Center, which has performed so far in 2024: seven kidney transplants from living donors and this is the first one performed from a deceased person. In 2023 there were 22 kidney transplants, 89 bone implants, 14 cornea implants, five tendon transplants and one skin transplant.
