Alfeñique Fair 2024: a sweet tradition to honor life and death >>>

#Turismo.- The history of the Alfeñique Fair dates back to pre-Hispanic times, when the Mexica people made a similar sweet called “atzaqualli” made with maguey honey and used to decorate the offerings to the gods.

In colonial times, the Spaniards introduced sugar, with which artisans began to make different types of sweets and, in 1630, this celebration dedicated to sweeten the Day of the Dead tradition in the capital of the State of Mexico began.

The alfeñique is a sweet made with sugar, water and gum arabic, it can be molded into different shapes, such as animals, fruits, flowers and religious figures. It is an important ingredient in the Day of the Dead offerings, celebrated in Mexico on November 1 and 2.

This year, from October 10 to November 3, a new edition of the Alfeñique Fair will be held in Toluca, which brings activities such as the exhibition and sale of alfeñique sweets in the 84 stands that adorn the portals, offering the products of more than 300 artisans.

In addition to workshops for the elaboration of alfeñique candies, alfeñique candy contests, traditional Mexican music and dance, as well as dramatized tours that, as every year, include the Panteón de la Soledad, with which the legends of this cemetery full of history will be spread.
