#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has as its priority axes for the current six-year term the early intervention in mental health, with emphasis on prevention and promotion, from a community approach and full respect for human rights.

On this World Mental Health Day, Dr. Joaquín Castillo Joo, psychiatrist and Coordinator of Medical Programs of the Coordination of Mental Health and Addictions of the Mexican Social Security Institute, highlighted that there is the Action Plan for Suicidal Behavior, the Plan for Comprehensive Mental Health Care for IMSS Workers, the Plan for Improvement of Care by Psychology Personnel and the Mental Health Emergency Care Program.

“At the Mexican Social Security Institute, a very important priority has been given to mental health problems. Comprehensive care has been promoted that prioritizes the well-being of the members and users. The modernization of care and training of personnel has been sought,” he said.

He pointed out that the Institute has health professionals trained to provide care for the main mental health problems, including Family Doctors, Emergency Doctors, Pediatricians, Psychiatrists, as well as Psychology, Nursing and Social Work staff.

“The monthly average of first-time consultations for mental health and addictions, in 2023, was approximately 15,681 consultations for people aged 20 and over; and care was provided to 5,550 minors. In the first half of 2024, the Institute has registered approximately 14,387 consultations for people aged 20 and over; and 4,872 consultations for girls, boys and adolescents,” he reported.
