GEM and Navy remove 72 tons of garbage in Zumpango Lagoon / @Edomex >>>
#EstadoDeMéxico.- The Government of the State of Mexico, through the Secretariat of Water (SAGUA) and in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy, completed the first stage of the rehabilitation of the Zumpango Lagoon, through the removal of silt and rectification of the lake area and adjacent canals.
In total, 120 thousand cubic meters of silt were removed from 10 kilometers of canals and 72 tons of garbage; 10 thousand square meters of water lilies were extracted from the canals and 32 thousand cubic meters of the lagoon were moved, which were submerged when the water level rose.
The work to rectify and clear 10 kilometers of canals involved 30 people on a permanent basis with two excavators from the Secretariat of the Navy, a backhoe, eight water trucks and two dump trucks from the Secretariat of Water.
These works benefited 150,000 inhabitants of the communities of San Juan Zitlaltepec, Lázaro Cárdenas, San José La Loma, Santa María de Guadalupe, Teoloyucan and the San Isidro neighborhood.
Pedro Moctezuma Barragán, head of SAGUA, explained that the Mexican government seeks to change the water management model and rescue the natural cycles.
The main objectives of the works are the prevention of floods, by reducing the risks of overflowing of the canals; the mitigation of pollution, with the improvement of water quality; the promotion of agriculture, with the irrigation units that guarantee the supply of water resources; the protection of the hydraulic infrastructure, by prolonging the useful life of the structures; in addition to favoring the quality of life of those who live in the area.
