IMSS and Teleton benefit Kristhel with a successful bone marrow transplant / @Tu_IMSS >>>

#IMSS.- With the collaboration agreement between the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and Hospital Infantil Teletón de Oncología (HITO) in Querétaro for the care of oncology patients, Kristhel “N” received a bone marrow transplant that will allow her to improve her quality of life.

Currently the minor has resumed her studies and dance classes, without neglecting her follow-up medical care at the Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 1 “Vicente Guerrero” of the IMSS in Acapulco.

The head of the State Reference Center for the Care of Children with Cancer (OncoCREAN) at HGR No. 1, Ana Bertha Rivera Ramírez, explained that three years ago the patient was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, for which she received immediate chemotherapy treatment.

She explained that due to problems in the central nervous system, Kristhel had a relapse and after several studies it was determined that she was a candidate for transplant protocol at HITO and that her mother would be the bone marrow donor.

In December 2021 the donation and transplant was completed, the minor remained hospitalized for 28 days for medical surveillance and was later referred for 45 more days to HGR No. 1 for follow-up; during her recovery the minor suffered from COVID-19 and low platelets; timely medical attention allowed her to continue with her post-transplant process successfully.

Currently, the child attends HGR No. 1 for a follow-up check-up that includes thyroid function tests and cardiological evaluation.

Dr. Rivera Ramirez explained that leukemias are the most frequent tumors in childhood and produce symptoms such as fever without apparent cause, discomfort when walking, abdominal pain, enlarged lymph nodes and the appearance of red spots (petechiae).
