Social Security calls for immunization of unvaccinated children against polio / @Tu_IMSS >>>
#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) called for the vaccination of children who are not immunized against poliomyelitis, as they are susceptible to infection when travelers from other countries carry the virus.
Dr. Maria Mercedes Orozco Lezama, coordinator of Medical Programs at the IMSS Hospitals Division, pointed out that this disease has no cure and, although it has been eradicated for 30 years in the American continent, the polio vaccine, when administered several times, can provide lifelong protection.
She indicated that the biological vaccine is given to children under 5 years of age, either orally (drops) or in its hexavalent presentation, and Social Security applies more than 8 million doses annually in the National Public Health Days and permanently in the Family Medicine Units.
The IMSS pediatric specialist highlighted that the hexavalent vaccine is applied intramuscularly to children at 2, 4 and 6 months of age, with a booster at 18 months and protects against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, Haemophilus influenzae, poliomyelitis and hepatitis B.
She emphasized that those who are going to receive the dose should not have fever, known allergies to the vaccine components and in case of taking medication, consult their physician first.
Dr. Orozco Lezama explained that poliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus that invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. The initial symptoms are fever, tiredness, headache, vomiting, neck stiffness and pain in the extremities; it can cause death.
