#ISSSTE.- Specialists from the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (Issste) saved the life of a newborn less than 15 days old, diagnosed with severe congenital heart disease. The collaboration between the General Hospital (HG) “La Paz”, in Baja California Sur, and the Regional Hospital (HR) “Lic. Adolfo López Mateos” in Mexico City, as well as the support of the Telemedicine service, made it possible to assess, transfer and successfully operate on the baby in less than a week.
The Institute reaffirms its commitment to guarantee timely attention to its beneficiaries, in compliance with the strategy of the Director General, Martí Batres Guadarrama, to reduce waiting times, avoid surgical backlogs and ensure the human right to health for all.
Alberto Zárate Fuentes, head of the Pediatric Cardiology Service of the HR “Lic. Adolfo López Mateos”, explained that the initial assessment of the newborn was carried out via Telemedicine, when the staff of the HG “La Paz” sent remotely an X-ray and an echocardiogram performed on the baby. With these studies, transposition of great arteries was diagnosed, a critical condition in which the main blood vessels leave the heart in the wrong directions, compromising the oxygenation of the body.
“This is a serious problem of the heart, where the flow out of the heart, instead of being crossed, comes out vertically or parallel. This situation greatly compromises oxygenation and is a cardiopathy that we call critical, what is this? It has to be treated in the first 30 days of life,” he explained.
Once the diagnosis was confirmed, the child was urgently flown to Mexico City, where the Issste medical team expedited the processes for his care.
